In order to meet the self-sufficiency of refractory materials used in the metallurgical industry of New China and the research and development of special refractory materials required for national defense, the only refractory material research institution in China, the Luoyang Refractory Materials Research Institute of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, was established in Luoyang in 1963. On January 6, 2010, the "State Key Laboratory of Advanced Refractory Materials" declared by Sinosteel Luoyang Institute of Refractory Technology was successfully included in the list of new State Key Laboratory, which is the first State Key Laboratory approved to be constructed in the field of refractory materials. The application and construction of State Key Laboratory has become a new highland for Sinosteel Luonai Institute to carry out scientific and technological innovation and bravely shoulder the mission of serving the country through science and technology. With wisdom and strength, it has created an innovative culture belonging to Sinosteel Luonai. Since its establishment in 1963, Sinosteel Luonai Institute has won more than 200 the State Technological Innovation Award and provincial and ministerial scientific and technological progress awards, including 34 national awards.

In October 2019, in order to inherit the great revolutionary spirit and eternal belief power of the older generation of proletarian revolutionaries, Sinosteel Luonai held the "Never Forget the Original Aspiration and Eternal Belief - Luonai Workers Remembering Comrade Xi Zhongxun Exhibition". In December 2019, the former China Steel Group Refractory Materials Co., Ltd. and China Steel Luonai Institute were restructured and later established China Steel Luonai Technology Co., Ltd. Sinosteel Luonai Institute carefully refined the spirit of generations of Luonai scientists, carried out scientific and technological innovation and inheritance activities on the platform of the original exhibition hall for the inheritance of scientists' spirit and the State Key Laboratory for advanced refractory materials, identified the core scientists of the scientists' spiritual education base, and actively applied for the construction of "scientists' spiritual education base".

In May 2022, the good news came that relying on the "Scientists' Spiritual Education Base" declared by the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Refractory Materials of Sinosteel Luoyang Institute of Refractory Materials, it was jointly named as the "Scientists' Spiritual Education Base of 2022" by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense.

On August 23, 2022, the unveiling ceremony of the "Scientist Spiritual Education Base" of the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Refractory Materials of Sinosteel Luoyang Institute of Refractories was held. Taking this as an opportunity, Sinosteel Luonai Institute continues to strengthen its base construction and firmly holds the lifeline of technology in its own hands.

In 2023, the theme education of studying and implementing Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era will be vigorously carried out throughout the Party. We will revisit General Secretary Xi Jinping's call for scientists and scientific workers to shoulder historical responsibilities, adhere to the forefront of world science and technology, the main battlefield of the economy, major national strategic needs, and people's lives and health, and continuously advance towards the breadth and depth of science and technology. In order to deeply understand the important speech spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping on scientific and technological innovation, and implement the speech spirit of Hu Wangming, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Baowu, at the Baowu Science and Technology Innovation Conference, in November 2023, China Steel Luonai Institute completed the construction of the "Science Spirit Education Base Auxiliary Exhibition Hall" on the basis of the Science Spirit Inheritance Exhibition Hall, combined with the layout characteristics of the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Refractory Materials. This marks the successful establishment of a new battlefield for promoting the spirit of scientists by China Steel Luonai, which integrates exhibition, publicity, and education. The theme of the auxiliary exhibition hall is divided into three parts, namely "Caring for the arduous entrepreneurship of the motherland", "Liberating the mind and bravely taking on heavy responsibilities", and "Continuously striving for self-improvement and continuing the future".

Since the construction of the "Scientific Spirit Education Base", Sinosteel Luonai Institute has vigorously promoted the scientific spirit centered on patriotism, innovation, pragmatism, dedication, collaboration, and education, forming a strong atmosphere of respecting knowledge, advocating innovation, respecting talents, loving science, and dedicating oneself to science on a wider scale.

At the Baowu Science and Technology Innovation Conference, Hu Wangming presented the award to Li Hongxia, the recipient of the National Innovation Excellence Award and the Chief Scientist of China Steel Luonai, which is a great encouragement for the scientific research workers of China Steel Luonai to unswervingly carry out scientific and technological innovation.

On June 2, 2023, Academician Zhong Zhihua, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, conducted a research on the exhibition hall and key laboratory for the inheritance of the spirit of scientists. On December 12, 2023, the 60th anniversary of the founding of Sinosteel Luoyang Institute of Resistance and Advanced High Temperature Nonmetallic Materials Development Forum was successfully held. More than 200 experts and scholars from the government, enterprises and institutions, and universities attended the seminar. Academician Jiang Dongliang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences made a specially invited report to share cutting-edge developments in innovative technology.

On March 21-22, 2024, the Secretary General's Work Conference of Baowu Association for Science and Technology and the Common Technology Exchange Conference of Refractory Materials were held, with the participation of the Secretary General of the Association for Science and Technology of various steel production bases, representatives of special committees, and experts in the field of refractory materials. At the same time, a general technology exchange meeting for refractory materials will be held, focusing on topics such as "bottleneck" technology and common technology for exchange. Participants will visit the "Scientific Spirit Education Base" for exchange and discuss collaborative innovation.

Since 2023, China Iron and Steel Luonai Institute has increased its efforts in scientific and technological innovation. Two projects have won the first prize of Henan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award in 2023, and one project has won the third prize of Metallurgical Science and Technology Award of China Metallurgical Society of China Iron and Steel Industry Association. In January 2024, Li Hongxia, a core scientist of the Scientist Spirit Education Base, won the first National Excellent Engineer Award.

Future positioning and development

On January 5, 2024, the construction project of Sinosteel Luonai New Materials Research and Development Center began. A world-class comprehensive research and development center integrating research and development, inspection and testing, and comprehensive services is being intensively constructed. The "Scientist Spirit Education Base" has become an important part of the construction of the new materials research and development center building. In the future, the "Scientist Spiritual Education Base" will rely on the restructured State Key Laboratory and the new material R&D center building to develop into the incubation and dissemination base of Sinosteel Luonai's innovative culture.
